KOSEN
Driving Japan’s
Future Innovation

Japan’s 58 Institutes of Technology (KOSEN), located across the country, play an important role in Japan’s startup and innovation ecosystem. Spread across Japan, they enroll around 50,000 students, offering a rigorous alternative to the traditional university path. As the Japanese government strengthens its efforts to cultivate young talent and promote entrepreneurial innovation, KOSEN plays a key role in developing the next generation of innovators and startup founders. The intensive five-year curriculum begins at age 15 and focuses strongly on engineering, technical skills, and their practical application. At KOSEN, students work on hands-on projects that turn ideas into real-world impact.

KOSEN Startup Founders

In this video, we hear from KOSEN alumni who have founded startups with highly innovative technologies. These include mixed-reality glasses for reading digital manuals on the go, a system to detect water leaks by analysing vast amounts of audio data, and robots that can handle repetitive, tiring tasks in factories and on farms. At KOSEN colleges, students develop ambition, imagination, and a determination to learn from their mistakes. Every day, technology born in KOSEN classrooms helps shape the future for everyone, across the globe.
