A Historic Port City Between Mountain and Sea

Onomichi is a charming city nestled between the mountains and the sea.
Onomichi is blessed by the Onomichi Channel, which passes through the centre of the town and is also known as the ‘river of the sea’, since the opening of the port in the Middle Ages. Onomichi has flourished as the best port in the Seto Inland Sea, attracting people, goods and wealth.
The limited living space was filled with many temples, shrines and gardens, and houses were built. The result is a miniature garden city that retains the atmosphere of the medieval and modern periods.

A Scenic Journey of Temples, Cats, and Tranquil Views

Walking through the alleys and hills of Onomichi, you will experience unexpected joy and a mysterious space where the mountains, the sea, and the town become one.
On the mountain side of Onomichi is Senko-ji Temple, which offers a panoramic view of Onomichi town and the Onomichi Channel.
As you going down from Senko-ji Temple, you will find the ‘Cat Trail’. Cats live in the narrow alleyway, and there are also ‘Fukuishi Neko’, cats painted on round stones, which provide a soothing place for visitors.
You can also enjoy Setouchi-grown Tochu tea from the islands of Onomichi City.
