Home of World-Famous Wagyu

Matsusaka is a city located in Mie, a prefecture adjacent to Kyoto and Nara Prefectures. The city is known for Matsusaka beef, a renowned brand of wagyu raised with extreme care by experienced professionals in abundant natural landscapes. The prominent marbling is what makes this beef one of the highest valued in the world. In addition to making the perfect steak, this artisanal beef can be grilled to a tender texture in yakiniku, dipped in egg for a juicy bite of sukiyaki, and even enjoyed raw in sushi.

The City of Merchants and Tradition

Matsusaka, known as the city of merchants, served as a commercial and intellectual hub where innovative ideas on business and literature were exchanged during the Edo period (1603–1867). Majestic stone walls of castle ruins from the late 1500s stand in the city center overlooking the former residences of the castle guard. Famed Edo merchants who called the city home flourished by selling indigo cotton, a specialty traditionally dyed and handwoven in the city to this day. The merchants’ former homes, featuring pristine traditional gardens, are preserved alongside many other precious historical sites in the area.
