Mikkabi: Shizuoka’s under-the-radar gem
Mikkabi is a town nestled between verdant mountains and serene Lake Hamana in the western part of Shizuoka Prefecture, home to world-famous Mount Fuji. In the 17 to 19th century Edo period, Mikkabi was widely known as a post station on the Hime-kaido road, allowing numerous travelers to rest their weary legs. The quiet charmer of the town, famed for its premier Mikkabi mandarin oranges, offers a tapestry of idyllic landscapes and age-old living traditions.
Nature, Traditions and Shogun Heritage
Mikkabi is brimming with attractions where visitors can revisit the history of Japan’s most prominent Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, with historical temples visited by Ieyasu himself, the Kannon statue where he prayed for victory in battle, and Hama-natto, a nutritious gourmet dish that Ieyasu loved his whole life, remaining as a local specialty to this day. Fly high in a paragliding experience to take in the spectacular view of the lake, and get active on the water in one of several marine activities, to relive what Tokugawa Ieyasu went through in this very region.
